The Importance of Mechanical Formatting
Even a legally sound pleading will be rejected at the clerk's counter if it violates physical formatting rules. State court rules (such as California Rules of Court 2.100-2.119; Texas Rule 45; New York CPLR 2101) establish uniform document standards.
Core Formatting Specifications
- Top Margin Space: The first page must reserve at least a 2-inch blank margin in the top-right corner to accommodate the clerk's official filing stamp and barcode;
- Side & Bottom Margins: 1 inch on all other borders;
- Line Spacing: Double-spaced body text; single-spaced block quotes and captions;
- Font Specifications: 12-point standard font (Times New Roman, Arial, or Century Schoolbook);
- Line Numbering: Mandatory in states like California (28 numbered lines per page along the left margin);
- Signature Blocks: Must include attorney/litigant printed name, State Bar number (if applicable), physical street address, telephone, and electronic service email address.
